21 Tips For Low Cost Renovations!

June 20, 2016

1.MAKE A LIST

Renovating the kitchen? Make a list of what you want and what you don’t! This way you’re less likely to be swayed by contractors.

2. GO SHOPPING

There’s a wide choice of materials for every room in the house. The advantage of doing your own shopping is that you’ll be up to date on the costs. You might even discover alternatives at much better prices.

3. NEGOTIATE

The key to saving, in every circumstance, is negotiating! Everyone negotiates for deals on their phone, insurance, mortgage—so why not negotiate with contractors?!

4. PAINT YOUR KITCHEN CUPBOARDS

Unless you have a kitchen that’s in really bad shape, sometimes simply changing the colour of your cupboard doors can give the room a whole new look.

5. KEEP YOUR APPLIANCES

They’re often still in great condition! Appliances are expensive items that can really blow your kitchen renovation budget. They can always be changed later when they’re worn out.

6. LEAVE THE PLUMBING ALONE

When renovating your kitchen, avoid moving the plumbing fixtures to the sink or dishwasher—it can be very costly.

7. KEEP YOUR ISLAND INEXPENSIVE

Often, it’s not the island that’s the expensive part—it’s all the stuff you outfit it with, like dishwashers, stoves, and electrical outlets. Just keep the island for its main function: an additional workspace to cook or a side table for meals.

8. GET INVOLVED

Even if you know very little about renovating, you can participate in certain stages of the work—like demolition or hauling materials. These are simple tasks that can really make the bill grow if they’re done by a professional.

9. AVOID EXTRAS

Once the budget is set and the work is contracted, don’t add anything. All those little extras (changing the taps, adding a partition, etc.) can increase the original budget by up to 15%.

10. MODERNIZE OUTDATED ITEMS

Are your kitchen cabinets out of date, with rough mouldings? Simply glue a thin piece of wood on the cabinet surface or frame it. Add some colour, a quick brushstroke, and it’s like new again!

11. USE WHITE TO MAKE A ROOM LOOK BIGGER

To maximize a room’s light and make it look bigger, make sure to use white paint. You can put colour on a wall or two, but no more! This trick produces great results at very little cost.

12. GO DOORLESS!

In the kitchen, it’s fine to expose your pans, beautiful dishes, and cookbooks to the light of day. Swap your cabinet doors for pretty wall shelving instead—it’s cheaper!

13. CHOOSE YOUR COUNTERTOP CAREFULLY

Granite may be beautiful and durable, but it also costs a fortune. These days, there’s a wide range of laminated countertops to choose from.

14. REFINISH YOUR HARDWOOD FLOOR

Did you discover a hardwood floor after removing the linoleum in your kitchen? If it’s got only minor damage, a good sanding and varnish can provide a new look to an old floor.

15. FIND A PIECE OF FURNITURE FOR THE SINK

To hold the bathroom sink, an older piece of furniture that’s not being used can fit the bill. A little sanding and some paint can work wonders.

16. PAINT YOUR BATHROOM TILES

Are your bathroom tiles outdated? No need to completely retile to change the colour: a thorough cleaning and the right paint—100% polyurethane acrylic—will get the job done.

17. USE ADHESIVE TILE

For small areas that need covering, like the wall above the kitchen sink, use adhesive tile. There’s a huge selection of small tiles that can be applied directly onto plywood or the existing ceramic.

18. DRESS YOUR WALLS

Sometimes walls have flaws that paint will only highlight. In this case, opt for wallpaper or wallcoverings—they’re trendy and there’s a huge selection to choose from.

19. COVER YOUR CEILING

Popcorn plaster ceilings were all the rage back in the day, but not anymore. To camouflage an old ceiling that’s collecting dust, place decorative tile on top of it.

20. OPT FOR A CONCRETE COUNTERTOP

Another alternative to renovating your kitchen is to pour concrete on an old countertop. This can lower costs and allow you to be more creative.

21. PAINT YOUR DECK

If the wood on your deck is worn grey, you can restore a youthful look by using paint that contains polymer sand (it holds up better against harsh weather).
